ICPS highlights right to participate in political and public life
The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is meeting in Geneva from 3 to 21 March 2025 to review the implementation of the Convention on the Rights on Persons with Disabilities in different countries and regions.
This year, the Committee will organise a special day of general discussion to consider the implementation of Article 29 on the right to participate in political and public life around the world.
ICPS has submitted a report, highlighting that persons with cerebral palsy are prevented from exercising their right to participation in political and public life by restrictions due to legal capacity, multiple barriers to accessibility, a lack of awareness of their rights enshrined in the Convention, insufficient visibility for the potential role of persons with disability in the conduct of public affairs, and a failure to provide appropriate support to persons with disability seeking public office.
The report also cites examples of good practice and solutions to overcome these obstacles that should be promoted actively around the world.
ICPS will be represented at the special session in Geneva on 20 March 2025 by Rui Coimbras, President of the Portuguese Federation of Cerebral Palsy Federations and pioneer of the Accessible Vote, a prize-winning solution to allow persons with a disability to vote independently whatever their accessibility requirements.
